The initiator of the construction of an astronomical observatory near the mountain lake of Skalnate pleso was the important Czechoslovak astronomer Antonín Bečvář. At an elevation of 1752 m above sea level, the building consists of a two-storey rectangular mass with an adjoining cylindrical tower containing the telescope cupola with an opening roof. On the flat roof of the main building, in addition to various measuring instruments, is a second, smaller cupola. Currently in use by the Astronomy Institute of the Slovak Academy of Science, the observatory contains a number of specialised research areas and staff accommodations. The massive stone walls give the building a solid, mountain-like appearance.
