At the turn of the fifties and sixties, a memorial has been erected at the spot where in January 1945, German soldiers killed and cremated in a limekiln 800 to 900 local anti-fascists. It was designed by a trio of young architects in cooperation with a sculptor A. Vika. The memorial is composed of the original limekiln structure and a platform with a stylized 12 metre high (nearly 40 ft.) flame shape of white concrete. The statue of a kneeling woman with her arms spread in despair by K. Pataky came out a winner in a competition. Moderate symbolism with graceful shapes of the memorial turned out to be one of the best artifacts dedicated to the anti-fascist uprising.
