After the demolition of the historic buildings at the foot of Bratislava castle, a decision was made to build a high-speed motorway running directly through the historic urban core and linking the centre to Petržalka across the river. Spanning the Danube is a bridge, realised on the basis of the winning competition entry by architects Jozef Lacko, Ladislav Kušnír and Ivan Slameň, with engineer Arpád Tesár. Most visible in the bridge is its characteristic slanting pylon from the right bank, holding up the bridge surface with cables. Though many have expressed dislike of the general urban plan and setting, the architecture of the bridge and its slanted double pylon, along with the lens-shaped mass of the high restaurant, is not only courageous but indeed aesthetically interesting.
